customgpt series: testing the CF GPT

I'm kicking off a new series where I’ll take you through my journey of designing and piloting various custom GPTs for finance applications.

To start, I thought I’d trial a few of the most popular finance-focused custom GPTs currently available.

One that stood out was the “Corporate Finance GPT” created by Jacob Thomas, which has clocked over 25k conversations—so I figured it was a strong candidate to really put through its paces!

Here’s the first question I posed:

“I’m negotiating terms for the SPA and we need to agree a normalised cash level required to run the business. This will be treated as a debt item in the EVEQ bridge. The company has shown 3 deficits over the past year—£40k, £110k, and £90k respectively—with no deficits in any other months. In 2 of those 3 months, the deficit was driven by the quarterly VAT liability; in the remaining month, it was due to a one-off supplier payment. I’m acting for the seller. Please advise.”

Now, as a CF adviser myself, I know exactly what I’d be pushing for here—but would the GPT pick up on the key nuances that support arguing for a lower ongoing cash requirement on behalf of the seller?

Here’s the response:

The response is excellent, presenting a robust argument in favour of the seller. It recognises the non-recurring item while also acknowledging potential counterarguments and highlighting the supporting data we should provide to reinforce our position. I'm very impressed.

Now, I’ve created some fake personal bank statement data, to test how good the CF GPT is at visualising the intramonth cash requirements (note, this is separate to the example mentioned above).

I gave the GPT 50 lines of bank statement data, with the knowledge that 1 out of the 4 months should show a deficit. And guess what… the GPT was right on with their findings when I asked it to analyse:

At the bottom, I have requested they produce the workbook (as they so kindly offered!)

Unfortunately, they couldn’t get me the workbook, asking me to run some sort of Python script…..

All in all, this CF CustomGPT was very impressive for it’s in chat analysis and technical knowledge. Although some work needs to be done so the detailed analysis can be exported into Excel.
